Jonathan Clay is the newest writer for WR.
It’s a great pleasure of mine to be a writer for this wonderful site, a pleasure, and a means for heart-pumping excitement. You see, this is my first ever article that I have written. Ever. So I don’t aim to disappoint all you dedicated WowRelief listeners and readers. For this article I wanted to just share some experiences from one of my own characters, my first character actually. My original character was a Tauren Warrior named Elnoobpowner, and I’ve done everything you can do with a warrior, from PvE tanking, to PvP arms, so naturally I’d like to consider myself knowledgeable in that area.
As most of you may not know, Warrior tanking is an experience to be had, I remember my days MTing SSC and TK, amazed at the sheer detail of those raids. My least favorite, but most fun encounter within either instance was, by far, Void Reaver. This fight gave me tons of fits as the MT, being that Void Reaver (VR) knocked the tank with the highest threat back and dropped his overall threat by 50%. Should be no big deal, right? Just keep spamming Shield Slam and the occasional revenge to get yourself back up there, champ. I wish it were that easy. Warriors, you see, need to be hit in order to produce their lifeblood: Rage. Without rage a Warrior is just a big non-combat pet with lots and lots of armor.. not to mention they look hella cool. The other high threat ability other than Shield Slam, is revenge. Revenge can only occur after a dodge, parry, or miss. All of which can only happen if the boss is hitting said Warrior. Well, what do you do once the boss switches targets and stops hitting you as a warrior?
Well, there are a couple things: you can ask a Hunter to misdirect to you, pretty nifty little tactic and usually works. However, misdirect doesn’t make up 50% and rising threat loss, but it will get you back in the running for second or third in threat so the boss might wind up back on you in no time. I could have taunted as well, but on this particular boss fight, VR is untauntable, therefore taunting is useless. As Warriors, you learn to live with the gimpness of your threat production, and also your AoE threat. Don’t get me wrong, I think shock wave and having thunder clap hit all targets instead of just 4 was a major improvement. But, Warriors don’t have the constant ticking of an AoE like DK’s or Pally’s. For this reason, warriors will never have the capability that a DK or Pally does. I do see improvements to Warriors down the line however, I mean, they can’t buff Pally’s forever can they?
